Abuse of Sedatives and Hypnotics from the User´s Perspective: Case Study
Background | The abuse of psychoactive prescription drugs shows a rising tendency in the Czech Republic. Sedatives and hypnotics may be prescribed as long-term therapies for chronic disorders, which may lead to the development of tolerance and the need to increase doses. It is important to be aware of the risks posed by the uncontrolled use of these drugs. Aim | The chief aim of this case study was to describe the abuse of sedatives and hypnotics from a patient’s perspective, with a focus on the circumstances leading to drug abuse, the beginning and course of the use of these drugs, self-awareness of the problem, current state and needs. Methods | A qualitative approach was applied to collect the data, involving a semi-structured interview as part of a master’s thesis. The interview was transcribed into a protocol summary and analysed using open and axial coding and categorisation. The data was compared with information obtained using the lifeline method. Results | The circumstances leading the patient to drug abuse seemed to have the characteristics of self-medication. The patient has been taking sedatives and hypnotics for 11 years. Currently, she combines these drugs with alcohol. Conclusion and recommendation | Further research into the abuse of sedatives and hypnotics needs to be conducted. These drugs should not be prescribed for more than four weeks. In the case of chronic illness, it is recommended to seek a specialist and address the problem comprehensively.
