Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment and Contingency Management for Smoking Cessation in Alcohol Use Treatment Patient: a Case Report
Summary | People with alcohol use disorders have a strikingly high prevalence of tobacco use, as well as greater nicotine dependence and higher difficulties in achieving smoking abstinence. Despite this, smoking cessation interventions are barely promoted among this population. In this line, the study aim was to describe a cognitive-behavioral therapy combined with contingency management for smoking cessation applied to a woman in outpatient alcohol use treatment. At baseline assessment, two measures were used: a clinical interview and standardized questionnaires to evaluate tobacco-related variables and depressive symptomatology. Tobacco use was biochemically verified through expired carbon monoxide and cotinine in urine. The patient achieved tobacco abstinence and remained at one-year follow-up, reaching a total of 382 days of continuous abstinence. Literature underlines the need to promote smoking cessation treatments among individuals with substance use disorders. This case study is an example of an effective treatment for smoking cessation in this population, which can be implemented in clinical settings.
